Dementia is a progressive disease that leads to memory loss, confusion and communication problems. It can be confusing for not only the dementia sufferer but also their family and friends. To increase awareness of the disease, the Alzheimer’s Society has created an annual Dementia Awareness Week which takes place this week.

Today, Thursday 7th April 2016 is World Health Day which is a global health awareness day celebrated every year under the sponsorship of the World Health Organisation (WHO). This year, World Health Day is dedicated to raising awareness of diabetes in the hope that we can finally beat it. Around the world, it is estimated that 347 million people suffer from diabetes and the prevalence is growing, particularly in low and middle income countries. The WHO projects that by 2030, diabetes will be the seventh leading cause of death in the world as the disease caused 1.5 million deaths in 2012.

With the four day Easter break upon us, many families will be celebrating the event with family, friends and of course lots of chocolate eggs and hot cross buns. Last month Repton Medical traveled to San Diego, California to attend the 2016 Posey Global Sales Conference. The four day conference involved team building, meetings, product training and an awards ceremony. We are happy to announce that Repton Medical was awarded “Largest Growth in Patient Safety and Falls Management” at the ceremony.

In recent news, Unicef UK has introduced a new opportunity for neonatal units to achieve the Baby Friendly accreditation! This exciting opportunity has arisen for neonatal units following the receipt of a grant to Unicef UK from the Burdett Trust. The £110,000 grant intended to be used over three years is proposed to empower neonatal nurses with the knowledge and skills to promote breast-feeding/breast milk use, to deliver a transformational cultural shift and to bring parents and nursing staff together to care for the babies.

One of the top stories in the world health news at the moment is the alarming threats of the Zika virus which is likely to spread across Americas. The virus, which causes symptoms including mild fever, conjunctivitis and headaches, has already been found in 21 countries in the Caribbean, North and South America.
